Karl Benz is known to be the founder of the modern car. In 1879 he was granted a patent for his first engine. He owned his own company called Benz & Cie. that was founded in 1883. In 1886 he was granted another patent for an automobile powered by his own four-stroke cycle gas engine that he created the preious year. He began selling the automobile in 1888. In 1896 he created the first internal combustion engine that was practical and useful.
Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) was a company formed by Wilhelm Maybach and Gottlieb Daimler in 1890. The first automobile that was sold by the company was a horse drawn stagecoach built by another company that they infused an engine of their creation in 1892. During the year of 1895 DMG created 30 vehicles.
Neither Daimler or Maybach was part of DMG during the Merger between DMG and Benz & Cie. Gottlieb Daimler died in 1900 and Wilhelm Maybach quit shortly after 1902. Later after Daimler had died Maybach created an engine named Daimler Mercedes, that was specially fitted for Emil Jellinek. In 1902 a new brand of DMG automobiles was created and was called Mercedes.
Karl Benz proposed to merge with DMG after economic conditions deteriorated after World War l. DMG denied the offer at first. Several years later after the economy had worsened, the two companies started to negotiate again, and in 1924 the two companies signed an Agreement of Mutual Interest. They standardized design, production, purchasing, and sales. In 1926 the two companies merged forming Daimler Benz. Every car was called Mercedes Benz because of the Daimler Mercedes Engine created by Maybach.
